Volkswagen has overtaken Tesla in the number of electric car sales in Europe in 2025. The German automaker saw an increase of 56% from 2024, while Tesla's sales fell by nearly 30%.
After several years of Tesla topping electric car sales in Europe, the tables have turned in 2025. According to a new report from Data Force, Volkswagen has climbed to the top spot in sales of electric cars in the Old Continent, overtaking the American brand, writes Automarket.
Over the course of last year, Volkswagen sold 274,417 electric cars on the continent, 56% more than it did in 2024. Tesla, on the other hand, sold 238,765 electric cars, down 271TP33T from 2024.
Even with this drop in sales, Tesla can still boast the Model Y, which remains the best-selling electric model in Europe. Last year 151,331 copies of the American model were sold. Skoda Elroq comes a distant second with 94,106 units sold. The podium is completed by another Tesla model, namely the Model 3, which found 86,261 new customers in Europe in 2025.
The Volkswagen Group was helped by the fact that 5 of the top 10 electric models sold in Europe are produced by the German group.
