Rețele Electrice România, the electricity distribution operator and part of the PPC group in Romania, invested approximately 1.4 billion lei in 2025 (projects commissioned worth 1.2 billion), of which 908 million lei were from its own funds and the difference from other sources. These investments were made in modernization projects within its area of responsibility, aiming to increase the resilience of the distribution network, the company announced. Key projects were implemented in the Muntenia, Banat, and Dobrogea regions and included the modernization of existing transformer stations and substations, along with work to upgrade and extend underground and overhead power lines. In 2026, the company will continue its investment plans to build a modern, digitized electricity distribution network capable of meeting consumption needs with solutions adapted to the new realities of the energy transition.
Investments directly impact the improvement of the quality and safety of electricity supply services for consumers, the expansion of connection capacities for new consumers, and the digitalization of infrastructure for efficient management of unplanned outages.
„Last year was a very good year for us: we made a consistent volume of investments in all the counties where we operate – from modernizing transformation stations and medium and low voltage overhead power lines, to complex projects to increase supply security and environmental protection. These are investments that are visible on the ground and, above all, bring direct benefits to the communities where we operate. Our performance indicators have constantly improved as a result of efficiently made investments. We continue to take relevant steps towards building intelligent, resilient networks that will offer consumers solutions adapted to the new realities of the energy transition,” stated Mihai Pește, General Manager of Rețele Electrice România.
In short, in figures, the year 2025 meant – 2 new transformer stations, 4 upgraded stations, 1 km of new high-voltage line, approximately 64 km of upgraded high-voltage lines, 303 km of new medium-voltage lines, 453 km of upgraded medium-voltage lines. In the network digitization process, 575 new remote control points were added. Also, nearly 1,000 new transformer posts were added, while 440 were upgraded. In 2025, the total number of smart meters installed by Rețele Electrice România reached 2 million, the largest volume achieved in the electricity distribution system in Romania.
Rețele Electrice România continues its investment plan in 2026 for its area of responsibility, with the goal of building a modern, digitized electricity distribution network ready to provide its customers with solutions adapted to the new realities of the energy transition. For the year 2026, commissioning within investment works totaling 1.3 billion lei is planned, of which 821.3 million lei will come from own funds, and the difference from other sources.
This year, the works primarily focus on modernizing and replacing the electricity distribution infrastructure, by changing worn-out high and medium voltage cables and rehabilitating overhead and underground lines. An important component is the creation of loops and network reconfigurations to increase redundancy and ensure continuity of supply to consumers. Furthermore, extensions and upgrades of transformer stations are planned, as well as the modernization of switching and protection equipment to support load growth and improve operational safety. The implementation of automation, telecontrol, and smart metering systems allows for rapid fault localization and reduced outage durations. Overall, the investments aim to increase network reliability, improve the quality of energy supplied, and reduce long-term operational costs.
During the period 2026-2030, the execution of projects financed by the Modernization Fund will continue in the three distribution areas of Retele Electrice Romania (Muntenia Sud, Banat, and Dobrogea), the projects totaling 1.36 billion lei, of which 1 billion lei are grants. Furthermore, during 2026-2027, the implementation of the AADMS project, co-financed by the Sustainable Development Program, will continue. The project was initially financed by POIM, with a total value of 135 million lei, of which 69 million lei are non-reimbursable contributions. In parallel, the WFM operational efficiency system is being implemented, another step in the digitalization process carried out at Retele Electrice Romania.
