Romania can become the new major hub for data centers in Central and Eastern Europe.

Romania could establish itself as a new major data center hub in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE), with analyst estimates placing it in the second most important position in the region after Poland. Investment growth in this segment is being fueled by increasingly strong renewable energy capacity and demand for artificial intelligence (AI) projects. Among the major projects already announced are a joint 800 MW development by AIC and ClusterPower, a €1 billion green energy and data center project by China's Sany, and significant public-private investments in AI factories. Meanwhile, European data centers are projected to attract investments of approximately €176 billion between 2026 and 2031.

While the FLAP-D (Frankfurt, London, Amsterdam, Paris, Dublin) region continues to dominate the market, with an estimated IT capacity of over 6,600 MW for 2026, Central and Eastern Europe is rapidly closing the gap, projected to reach approximately 883 MW this year. Poland is leading this dynamic, with capacity estimated to grow from 197 MW in 2024 to 511 MW by 2031, maintaining an accelerated pace in the hyperscale segment as well. Alongside Poland, Romania has the potential to double or even triple its capacity in the coming years.

This trend is confirmed by studies such as „European Data Center State 2026” (EUDCA) and „Investment Perspectives for Data Centers in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE)”conducted by Platform Insight, which highlights Romania as one of the fastest-growing colocation markets in the region.

Key Data Center Developments and News (2025-2026)

A massive 800 MW initial project is being realized by AIC and ClusterPower: In December 2025, Accelerated Infrastructure Capital (AIC) and the Romanian operator ClusterPower (an NVIDIA DGX-Ready partner) announced a partnership to develop a multi-year project of up to 800 MW across two campuses in southwestern Romania.

Another investment of 1 billion euros belongs to the Sany Group: the Chinese company intends to invest 1 billion euros in a green energy project and a data center in Romania, contributing to the country's growing status in the AI data center boom. The activation of the Government Private Cloud represents another contribution, and Romania's Government Private Cloud, a major national project aiming to consolidate government IT systems through public-private partnerships, enters its operational phase in 2026.

Additionally, the AI unit at ICI Bucharest is being added to important pilot projects. A consortium coordinated by ICI Bucharest is developing an „AI Factory,” strengthening Romania's position in AI infrastructure.

Thus, Romania is experiencing rapid growth, with the potential to double or triple its capacity. It has a strategic advantage due to its high energy diversity (over 60%% from clean sources) and, as mentioned in industry news, is well-positioned to manage the network constraints faced by Western European hubs, if and only if major investments are made in the grids.

And according to the EUDCA 2026 Data Center Report, Romania is highlighted as one of the fastest-growing colocation markets, attracting investor attention for both standard AI and non-cloud projects.
