The A8 highway may not be fully completed by 2030, says expert Adrian Covăsnianu on his Facebook page.
A8 motorway and TEN-T Core Corridor 2030 deadline - a realistic analysis, based on facts!
says Adrian Covăsnianu, vice-president of „Moldova wants a highway” (MVA).
The European Court of Auditors' recent report makes one thing clear: even much more advanced TEN-T projects, such as the A1 highway, have exceeded initial estimates. The deadline of 2027, 2028 has been abandoned and the revised timetable pushes the full completion of the Sibiu - Pitesti mountain section to 2029, due to structural delays, contract durations, problems with permits and authorizations, and governance deficiencies
”Applying the same analysis grid to the Unirii Highway (A8), the conclusion is even more worrying. The current situation of the A8 motorway (January 2026): 55 km under construction out of more than 300 km, design and execution tenders launched but contested on the Iasi sector; mountainous area (the most difficult): Design and Execution contracts recently signed (2025), work start orders not fully issued, contract durations up to 54 months (4 years and 6 months)...This means that at the beginning of 2026, just over 18% of the length of the Autostrada Unirii is actually under execution”says the analyst.
”The A8 highway cannot be fully completed by 2030 in its current technical and administrative state. Isolated sections can be delivered, but not a functioning TEN-T Core corridor. Maintaining the „A8 in 2030” rhetoric, without real implementation coverage, risks: loss of institutional credibility, additional European pressures, forced rescheduling and strategy corrections”says Adrian Covăsnianu.
