Fitch Ratings Banca Transilvania's long-term issuer default rating (IDR) has been upgraded by S&P from „BBB-” to „BBB”, one notch above the country's rating.
As a rule, a bank's rating does not exceed the rating of the country in which it operates because macroeconomic and political risks influence the entire financial system: because it finances companies and the population, a bank is directly influenced by the evolution of GDP, inflation, interest rates, government policies, and fiscal stability, the credit institution announced.
”Fitch has updated the rating criteria for some Central and Eastern European banks, including Banca Transilvania. The new rating criteria highlight BT's resilience, supported by solid financial results and its capacity to absorb economic shocks. Banca Transilvania has raised nearly 4 billion euros since 2023 through seven MREL eligible bond issuances, which has strengthened its status as an active issuer in the Romanian capital market and the region.”officials at the bank say.
Fitch Ratings considers Banca Transilvania to be more resilient than its operating environment due to strong financial performance, very good capitalization, access to international markets, and a financing strategy through MREL-eligible bonds.
At the same time, Fitch points out that the bank's long-term issuer rating remains influenced by Romania's sovereign rating, which continues to have a negative outlook.
Fitch has assigned Banca Transilvania deposit ratings: „BBB” for long-term deposits, one notch above the bank's viability rating („bbb-”), reflecting an additional level
”Banca Transilvania has consistent access to international capital markets thanks to its robust financial profile and funding strategy, aspects noted by Fitch Ratings and which contributed to the increase in BT's long-term issuer rating. In addition, the bank's recognized brand and reputation built over time reinforce investor confidence and facilitate the attraction of funding on competitive terms.”, BT officials stated.
The bank will publish its first-quarter financial results on May 22, 2026.
