PPC Renewables Romania, the largest private investor in renewable energy in Romania, will develop a battery energy storage system (BESS) with a capacity of 60.12 MWh at the Sălbatica 1 wind farm, the company announced.

The project is worth 68.2 million lei, of which about 9.87 million lei will be provided by European funding through the Modernization Fund.

The project is part of PPC Renewables Romania's plan to expand its renewable energy portfolio with projects that can contribute to the reduction of the Romanian generation capacity deficit and to the stability of the system, through the predictable generation profile provided by the storage of electricity in batteries.

Situated in the South-East Region, Valea Nucarilor TAU, Tulcea County, the wind farms Sălbatica 1 and Sălbatica 2 total 70 modern turbines of 2 MW each, equally divided between the two wind farms. Once commissioned, the BESS system will contribute to the development of electricity storage capacities in the National Electricity Grid and increase the flexibility and efficiency of energy produced from renewable sources.

In addition to the development of the storage system, the project involves the construction of the necessary infrastructure elements, the development of the operating, access and fencing roads, the implementation of the safety lighting and monitoring systems, as well as the area set up for operation, maintenance and security and site organization.

The project is financed by the Modernization Fund - Support for investments in the development of electricity storage capacity (batteries) connected to an existing renewable energy plant. The investment totals 68.225.209,209,57 lei. The maximum amount provided from the Modernization Fund is 28.24% of the eligible expenditure, i.e. 9,872,978,978.54 RON, and the amount provided by PPC Renewables Romania is 58,352,231.03 RON.
