Ten new electric trams, with more than 150 seats, will enter Timisoara's public transportation fleet by next spring, after the municipality will sign the supply contract with the Turkish company Bozankaya. The vehicles will serve the route between North Railway Station and the Buziaș industrial area.

The ten trams are purchased with European funds through the Regional Program (RP) West 2021-2027, the contract is worth 105,760,000 lei (excluding VAT), Agerpres and RRA report.

„With the purchase of the new smaller trams, we are able to modernize public transport also on routes where we could not introduce the trams already in circulation so far. We managed this with European funds.

The new trams will be able to be introduced on line 9, which connects the North Railway Station and the industrial area of Buziaș, respectively on line 7, which connects the Fratelia neighborhood and the Citadel/Torontal area,” said Mayor Dominic Fritz, quoted in a press release.

The new trams will be 20 meters long and equipped with state-of-the-art technology: electric traction, regenerative braking, air conditioning, real-time information systems, Wi-Fi, video surveillance and increased accessibility. They will operate on the principle of zero CO2 emissions as part of the transition to clean public transport.

Timisoara City Hall is also in the process of public procurement for ten trolleybuses, with low-floor, electric traction, e-ticketing system, air conditioning and other modern equipment.

The municipality is also in the process of purchasing 20 electric buses and 20 slow charging stations. The funds are also provided through the Regional Program (RP) West 2021-2027 and from the local budget.

In recent years, the municipality has invested around 700 million lei to renew its public transport fleet with new trams, electric buses and trolleybuses.
