Alstom announces that it has delivered the first series-produced Traxx Passenger electric locomotive for the Railway Reform Authority (ARF), marking an important milestone towards a new generation of passenger services – cleaner, faster, and more efficient – based on the contract signed with ARF in January 2024.
„ARF's long-term ambition is to modernize railway passenger transport services in Romania and to expand sustainable, high-performance mobility, and this first delivered locomotive represents an important step in turning this vision into reality. We are proud to support these national objectives by providing reliable and energy-efficient rolling stock, which will enable faster and more reliable rail travel for passengers across the country.” declared Șerban Iorga, General Manager Alstom for Romania, Bulgaria, and Moldova.
The Traxx Passenger locomotive has successfully completed its entire testing program for market authorization, confirming its readiness for safe and efficient operation at speeds of up to 200 km/h. The fleet endurance testing phase will commence in the coming weeks, running in parallel with driver training, and deliveries will continue throughout 2026.
The electric locomotives are equipped with two bogies with fully suspended traction motors, which allow for faster long-distance travel and can haul up to 16 passenger coaches, increasing transport capacity. They are fitted with Alstom's state-of-the-art ERTMS system on board for optimal efficiency and high levels of safety and security, while ensuring full interoperability. The contract for 16 Traxx locomotives includes 20 years of maintenance and repair services, with the option to extend for another 20 years.
Traxx locomotives have been approved in 20 countries, covering over 300 million kilometers annually, and since 2000, over 3,000 units have been sold.
Alstom has had a strong presence in Romania for over three decades, consolidating its leading position in railway electrification and signaling solutions, and currently employs over 2,000 people. The company plays a key role in delivering electrification and signaling projects along the Rhine-Danube railway corridor and in the Cluj region. Alstom is implementing the country's first urban CBTC signaling solution on Line 5 of the Bucharest metro, for which Alstom is also supplying new trains. Furthermore, Alstom has been providing maintenance services for the Bucharest metro fleet for over 20 years, with a current contract valid until 2036. The company's rolling stock contracts include the supply of electric trains for ARF, accompanied by comprehensive maintenance services.
