Romania's new car market ended 2025 on a surprisingly positive note after December beat all of the previous 23 months in terms of car registrations, up 58% from December 2024, up 58% from December 2024.

In total, new car registrations in Romania in 2025 amounted to 182,518 units, an increase of +1.6% compared to 2024. Here we are talking about 155,855 passenger cars and 26,723 light commercial vehicles and minibuses + heavy commercial vehicles and buses.

Electrified engines have become the dominant segment of the Romanian car market, writes Coursesgovernment.

Detailed analysis by the Association of Romanian Automobile Manufacturers and Importers (APIA) shows that 2025 brought a massive advance in electrified powertrains, which accounted for 55.2% of all new car registrations - practically becoming the dominant segment of the market.

Comparatively, full electric cars have seen a decline in 2025, both in volume and share, with a drop of -9%.

The final data for 2025 indicate a relatively stable car market, with 182,518 cars registered, up by +1.6% compared to 2024, a result very close to the APIA forecast of 179,000 units, formulated at the beginning of the year, a performance all the more relevant as this estimate was made in a context marked by a high degree of unpredictability, volatility of public decisions and multiple policy adjustments, which have significantly influenced market behavior during the year.

Passenger cars generated this development, with 155,855 units, marking an increase of +4.7% compared to the previous year, above the forecast level. In contrast, light commercial vehicles and minibuses registered a decrease of -19.5%, while heavy commercial vehicles and buses had a relatively stable evolution
